Social Network Mapping
September 26, 2007
I may not even be calling it by the right name, but what I’m thinking of is whereby one creates a map of who is connected to whom.
The org chart at work tells me nothing about who interacts with whom or how the work actually gets done. It only shows who people report to.
I’m trying to uncover the links between people and something about the nature of their relationship. On an org chart all you can see is who my boss is. You can’t tell who I work with formally and, more importantly, informally – this might reveal how the work gets done. Nor can you tell who my internal clients are. This would reveal what I’m really doing and who I’m helping. If I can uncover these things then I can tailor my KM plan and suggest relevant solutions.
